Adapt to a new culture but retain your ideology

I take pride in being an Indian and more so an Indian with an modern upbringing, open minded thought process and yet a conservative value system. At a very young age we learnt to speak our minds out and think independently. Freedom of expression and crucial decision making were one of the biggest gifts my parents could have given me. I often took this for granted till I got married into a conservative patriarchal family. While my in laws would love to believe that they are open minded, I'd beg to differ. My husband is still strongly influenced by his brother and father. Many a times I find my husband victim to my father in law's decisions as he has the final irrational word to almost everything. Most of my ideologies and philosphies differ from my new family so to accept advice I find no sense in is almost impossible. I have always lived life on my terms and managed my finances.
